Morning,

Thought I might try to generate some discussion:

If you're not reading, or following the "Tyee" on-line and you're an educator (to be), you might want to have a look. There have been some interesting articles, on children and the effects of "cyber-culture", as well as other poignant topics (university education, and the the ongoing teacher/gov't labour dispute).

Check it out: http://thetyee.ca/

Regards,

Blair

  1. Thanks Blair, the Tyee is a great source for "alternative" perspectives on issues such as education and provides some great counterpoints to mainstream media!!!!!

  2. I read the article about teacher's wages and realized I never once considered salary before beginning this program. And I have no idea what the average teacher's salary is. But I do know that it is a popular debate. Teacher's often claim they aren't paid nearly enough for the work that they do, while others assume that teachers have it easy and are paid too well. I think in general, many British Columbians are underpaid. Isn't it true that British Columbia is the most expensive province to live in, yet we still have the lowest minimum wage in Canada? I have an acquaintance who completed the Elementary B Ed program at Uvic a few years ago. She was a server at a restaurant while she was a student. I recall her making some comment that once she begins teaching she will make about the same amount of money per year that she would make from serving (including gratuities) but at least she would have a career as opposed to just a job.
